The Embassy of Ghana in Paris extends its warmest congratulations to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghanaian diplomatic delegation following a monumental victory at the United Nations General Assembly.
On Wednesday, March 25, 2026— coinciding with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade— the UN General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution spearheaded by Ghana. With an overwhelming 123 votes in favor, the international community formally declared the transatlantic slave trade and racialized chattel enslavement as the "gravest crime against humanity."
Acting in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Reparations, President Mahama tirelessly championed this resolution to ensure that the horrors of the past are met with historical accuracy, legal defensibility, and a unified continental voice. As President Mahama stated before the Assembly, this resolution is not about division, but rather "a route to healing and reparative justice," serving as a necessary safeguard against the erasure of history.
The Embassy in Paris is incredibly proud of Ghana's leadership on the global stage. We join Ghanaians at home, the diaspora in France, and the broader international community in celebrating this bold step toward acknowledging historical truth and laying the foundation for genuine reconciliation and equality.
